Supporting Your Child's Mental Health: Recognizing Warning Signs and Seeking Help

You’ve had concerns about your child’s mood. You're unsure if your child is tired from increased activity at school or if something is going on with their health.

Dr. David Yip of Angel Pediatrics, located in Anthem, AZ, is a board-certified pediatrician who can help you and your child with any concern, whether physical or mental health issues.

What are Mental Disorders?

Mental health involves emotional regulation, social skills, and behavior. People of all ages can have mental health issues, and mental disorders can cause your child to have a hard time handling their emotions or behavior. But even though it seems scary, your child can live a successful, productive, and healthy life with proper treatment.

Signs or Symptoms of Mental Disorders

According to Dr. Yip of Angel Pediatrics, located in Anthem, AZ, your child may display the following signs and symptoms regarding their mental health.

  • Exaggerated unaccounted fear
  • Uncharacteristic anger or irritability
  • Trouble sleeping consistently
  • Change in appetite
  • Emotional withdrawal, self-isolation, decreased socialization
  • Engages in problematic relationships
  • Risk-taking including possible drug and alcohol use
  • Increased stomach aches and headaches more than three times a week
  • Poor school performance, avoiding school or work responsibilities

Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Disorders

To diagnose any mental health disorder, our doctor would want to see your child for a complete physical. We must review all family history, including current medical history. We will determine if we should rule out anything physical that may be the cause of changes seen in your child.

If your child's physical health is normal or doesn’t seem to tell the whole story, our doctor will move on to the next step in diagnosis. Depending on your child's age, our pediatric doctor may have you and your child complete a simple assessment regarding behavior and mood.

If your child is of school age, our doctor may have you take a form to your child's teacher so they can also do an assessment. Once all the assessments are in, our doctor can diagnose properly.

There are two ways to treat disorders: therapy and medication. Our doctor can recommend therapists to work with your child. Our pediatrician would work in conjunction with your therapist if medication is needed.
