Essential Newborn Care: A Guide for First-Time Parents

As first-time parents, there are many things that can cause you worry. Dr. David Yip of Angel Pediatrics provides newborn care in Anthem, AZ. He can answer your questions and help you to understand all the essentials of caring for a newborn.

Some of the things that are a part of essential newborn care include how to hold the baby, how to bathe the baby, how to care for the umbilical cord, the fontanels, feeding, and sleeping.

Making your first pediatrician appointment

Within a few days of leaving the hospital, you will have your first visit to your pediatrician. At this visit, your child will be measured and all their vitals checked. This is an important visit for you and your baby. It is a time to bring up any concerns you have about caring for your baby.

Holding a newborn

Your newborn is a precious and fragile treasure, and you may be terrified that they are also breakable. They are delicate but surprisingly sturdy. You need to make sure that their neck and head are supported and then enjoy holding your newborn.

Feeding

Especially, if you are breast-feeding, you may have real concerns that your newborn is not getting enough to eat. When they go in for their first and second pediatric visit, their weight will be noted and if it is going up, it is a good sign. While you are holding the baby, it is an opportunity to bond, and it is an important part of your developing relationship with your baby.

Bathing

Bathing your baby is a nerve-wracking part of your essential newborn care in Anthem, AZ. It is scary to hold your naked newborn in water, especially when they still have their umbilical cord attached. A sponge bath is one of the better options for the first few weeks to keep the umbilical cord dry.

Fontanels

There are two fontanels on the top of your baby's head. They are soft spots that you may notice when you wash your baby's hair. You may be able to feel your baby’s pulse. The spots will close as the cranium develops, and they are not something to worry too much about, just be gentle.

Sleeping

Sleeping is something of great concern to new parents. Sleep is something that newborns need and parents also need.  No two newborns will have the same sleeping schedule. Some are great sleepers and others seem to be awake 24/7. Keep calm, try to get some sleep, and make sure your newborn is fed, changed, and comfortable.
