Understanding Pediatric Well-Child Checkups

When a child is sick, taking them to visit a pediatrician is a given. For some people, well-child visits in Anthem, AZ are not as well understood.  Dr. David Yip of Angel Pediatrics helps parents understand the value of being proactive in the healthcare of their children. From birth through their teens, having a regular schedule of visits is vital for your child.

What To Expect at a Well Child Visits

Well child visits are designed to make sure that your child is meeting all the developmental milestones. Your pediatrician will be aware of what those milestones are and if they notice that your child is not meeting them, they will recommend the appropriate follow-up with a specialist if necessary.

Newborn

The well visit that your newborn has begins within a few days of leaving the hospital.  The baby will be measured and weighed, including measurement of their head. This visit is vital to set a baseline for growth from here on. When you breastfeed it is difficult to determine how much food they are actually getting and their weight is how you know that they are getting enough food. During this visit is also important for you to ask questions of your pediatrician especially if this is your first child, you may be feeling a little frightened, confused, and most assuredly tired.

Baby

The first year will be full of firsts and your child will also be getting many vaccinations to protect them from some of the dangerous childhood diseases. Many milestones will be met and surpassed.  You will know what percentile your child falls into. This is not something that is a big concern unless they fall way outside the normal.

Childhood

Your child will get well-child visits in Anthem, AZ before they start school. Their vaccinations must be up-to-date. All their vitals will be taken. Hearing and vision will also be checked. Every few years your school system requires your child to have other check-ups and if they are involved in sports a sports physical will be required.

Adolescent Care

As your child becomes a teen they will have new concerns of their own and if they develop a close working relationship with their pediatrician they will find it easy to discuss some of the things that may be bothering them and the doctor will notice if there are unusual changes.
