Signs of Pediatric Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not properly produce or use insulin, a hormone that converts blood sugar into energy. When insulin is not properly regulated blood sugar levels can become too high or low, resulting in a variety of symptoms. The board-certified providers at Angel Pediatrics in Anthem, AZ, diagnose and treat diabetes in children and teens.

Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 is also called pediatric or juvenile diabetes and , while type 2 is sometimes referred to as adult onset diabetes. However, children, and teens can be diagnosed with either type. Type 1 diabetes is significantly less common than type 2.

With type 1 diabetes the pancreas does not make enough insulin or is unable to produce any at all. Without enough insulin, blood sugar is unable to enter the cells in the body and be converted into energy. This causes blood sugar to build up in the bloodstream, which can lead to a host of unwanted symptoms. Type 1 diabetes can be treated and managed, but there is no known way of preventing it. Children with a family history of type 1 diabetes have a higher risk for developing the disease.

In patients with type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces insulin but the body has become insulin resistant or is no longer using insulin efficiently. Kids who are overweight, inactive, and have unhealthy dietary habits are at an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. It can be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a balanced diet.

Signs and Symptoms of Pediatric or Juvenile Diabetes

Kids with diabetes can experience various symptoms when their blood sugar levels are either too high or low. The three most common signs of pediatric diabetes are:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased hunger
  • Frequent urination

Other symptoms of diabetes in children include irritability and behavior changes, as well as unintentional weight loss and fatigue. Many kids with diabetes also have breath that smells somewhat fruity.
